Originally a tool, now a specialized close-combat weapon. Learn the unique techniques of the curved blade from Asian and European traditions.
SAMI-X Karambit
The SAMI-X Karambit system is a specialized fighting art focused on the practical use of the karambit — a curved blade weapon with roots in both Asian and European traditions.
Originally intended as a tool, the karambit has evolved into one of the most effective close-combat weapons due to its unique curved shape and ring grip. The SAMI-X approach combines traditional martial arts knowledge with modern self-defense concepts, creating a system that is both deeply rooted and practically applicable.
The system is structured into 3 progressive levels and is suitable for all fitness levels, from complete beginners to experienced martial artists.
The curved blade. The ring grip. The art of close combat – SAMI-X Karambit.

The karambit's curved shape creates fundamentally different mechanics than straight-blade weapons:hooking and trapping capabilitiesenhanced close-range controlnatural integration with empty-hand techniquesThe ring grip ensures the weapon stays secure in the hand even during dynamic movements and transitions.
SAMI-X Karambit bridges history and present:Asian origins – Southeast Asian martial arts traditionsEuropean influences – ring-knife and cleaver techniquesModern adaptation – structured for today's training environmentsThis dual heritage gives the system a rich technical vocabulary that goes beyond any single tradition.
The karambit excels in close-range situations where other weapons lose effectiveness:hooking, trapping, and controlling an opponentseamless transitions between armed and unarmed techniquesclinch-range applications and grappling integrationTraining emphasizes real-world applicability and practical scenarios over sport or performance.
The SAMI-X Karambit system is built on:progressive learning across 3 clearly defined levelsbody-mechanic principles rather than brute strengthadaptable techniques that work regardless of size or athletic abilityWhether you are new to martial arts or a seasoned practitioner, the system meets you where you are.
Cultural Origins
A weapon with a millennia-old tradition.
The karambit originates from Southeast Asia — its roots lie in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Originally used as an agricultural tool for harvesting rice and herbs, the karambit evolved over centuries into one of the most feared close-combat weapons of the region.
In the Silat tradition (the traditional martial art of Southeast Asia), the karambit holds a special significance. It was carried as a personal weapon, and its curved shape is said to be inspired by the tiger claw concept — fast, precise, and deadly in close quarters.
Similar blade forms also exist in European traditions: ring knives and cleavers with comparable mechanics. SAMI-X Karambit unites this global heritage into a modern training system.

The karambit demands grip mastery. Four core techniques form the foundation.
The Standard Grip
The blade extends forward away from the thumb. Enables powerful cutting and thrusting movements with maximum reach. The entry-level grip for all fundamental techniques.
The Classic Karambit Grip
The blade points toward the body (ice-pick grip). The traditional and most effective hold for the karambit — enables hooking, ripping, and control techniques.
Switching in Combat
Fluid transition between forward and reverse grip under pressure. The ring on the handle enables rotations and switches impossible with any other blade.
Quick Draw and Positioning
Rapid, secure drawing and positioning of the karambit from various carry positions. Speed and security through the ring grip.
